Claws & Conservation: Community Outreach for Wildlife Conservation

The weekend-long Claws & Conservation campaign was envisaged to raise awareness and educate the public about wildlife conservation, especially the younger generation.

Organised by PPB Properties in partnership with PERHILITAN (Department of Wildlife and National Parks) and Pelindung Alam Malaysia, the entire campaign featured a line-up of engaging activities designed to generate curiosity and develop their understanding of our native wildlife beyond what is found in our science textbooks.

The highlight of the entire campaign includes an interactive exhibit showcasing actual, preserved specimens of Malayan Tigers and other wildlife. Visitors had a unique opportunity to get up close and personal with some of the species that call Malaysia home and take photographs with the exhibits.

Visitors were able to see and touch actual animal specimens, such as tiger skin and other animal specimens.

Beyond the exhibits, an educational exhibition featuring the symbol of Malaysia, the Malayan Tiger was displayed to educate shoppers on some fun facts about the animal and the importance of protecting these unique species from various threats that affect the wild tiger population. The public was encouraged to leave their pledges, an anecdote of what they learned or a note for other shoppers.

The exhibitions panels shared important facts about tigers, such as their habitat, diet and many more.

Several wildlife conservation experts from PERHILITAN and Pelindung Alam Malaysia were invited to share their knowledge and insights about the Malayan Tiger as well as other diverse species found in Malaysia’s rainforests such as tapirs, clouded leopards, red dholes, marbled cats and many more.

The public could contribute to wildlife conservation efforts by supporting Pelindung’s charity sales. All proceeds from the weekend were donated to initiatives aimed at protecting and preserving Malaysia’s precious wildlife.

Beyond that, the younger generation showcased their artistic skills through an art competition for participants aged 4 – 17 years old. Beyond encouraging creativity, the competition aimed to instil in young minds the importance of wildlife conservation.

A colouring and poster drawing competition centred around wildlife conservation was also held for children and teens aged 4 – 17 years old.

In its essence, Claws and Conservation was ideated as a call to action, highlighting the urgency of protecting our dwindling wild Malayan Tigers population and other endangered species. Every activity was designed to help shoppers gain a deeper understanding of the plight of our endangered wildlife and the challenges conservationists face in protecting them.
