10 Apr Empowering members of the community with lifesaving resuscitation skills
PETALING JAYA, 4 April 2025 – A joint community outreach programme Selangor Heart Safe Mass Training aims to empower the community with lifesaving resuscitation skills to quickly react to cardiac emergencies.
The initiative is set to be one of the first large-scale public cardiopulmonary resuscitations (CPR) and automated external defibrillator (AED) training sessions in Selangor. It will be held on 26 April 2025, from 1.00pm to 6.00pm, at Megah Rise Mall, Petaling Jaya.
According to the Department of Statistics Malaysia, coronary disease remains one of the top leading causes of death in 2024. Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) can affect individuals anywhere, anytime – even young, healthy individuals and children. Often, there are no warning signs before the heart suddenly stops.
The only chance for survival is if CPR is started immediately to preserve oxygen flow to the brain and vital organs. Patients of SCA face two potential outcomes: survive and suffer permanent brain damage or ultimately lose their lives.
According to Dato Dr. Luah Lean Wah, President of Penang Heart Safe Society (PHSS) and Malaysian Resuscitation Association (MyRES), in general SCA has a less than 1% survival rate in Malaysia.
In cases of SCA presented as ventricular fibrillation, immediate CPR and use of AED within 3 minutes of collapse increases the chances of survival, which can be as high as 70%.
In efforts to create meaningful impact to combat this issue, the Selangor Heart Safe initiative was jointly organised together with Penang Heart Safe Society (PHSS), the Selangor Committee on Resuscitation Training (SCORT), Alliance for A Safe Community (IKATAN), PPB Group Berhad and its property division PPB Properties.
Selangor Heart Safe mass training aims to foster a safer, more responsive community, ultimately improving survival rates from Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) and enhancing overall public health outcomes.
The main objectives of this initiative include:
- To increase public awareness on sudden cardiac arrest (SCA)
- To train community on life saving skills
- To introduce the functions of an AED device and share knowledge on how to use AED
One of the main events during this initiative includes one-hour hands-on CPR and AED training sessions, providing in-depth guidance by medical professionals. Participants will learn lifesaving skills to determine if a patient has suffered from sudden cardiac arrest, carry out high quality CPR and use an AED properly.
After the training, each participant would be enabled with the skills to step up to save countless lives by reacting immediately and effectively to incidents of sudden cardiac arrest within their communities.
The mall’s Ground Floor Main Atrium will also host interactive exhibits, including an experiential corner for children as young as 7 years old can be exposed to CPR and AED techniques as well as an interactive challenge where they can win prizes.
Participants may challenge each other with the CPR skills they’ve learnt from the training sessions, utilising a CPR manikin which will provide real-time feedback on their compression depth, rate, and technique.
Participation in the training requires pre-registration, which is free of charge and open to all individuals aged 12 and above. Walk-ins are also encouraged. All participants are encouraged to attend the training wearing long pants.
